MCT oil benefits you say? – I’ll need some convincing. When I first started researching the keto diet and came across MCT oil I have to admit I was a bit sceptical.
I mean let’s face it, adding pure oil into my diet? How was that going to help me lose weight? Let alone the thought of it was pretty off-putting.
But not being a person to condemn without trying I decided to at least do some testing for myself and am so glad I did. I have definitely gone from being a sceptic to a believer.
Seriously MCT oil benefits are amazing but I don’t expect you just to take my word for it so let’s dig in a little deeper, so I can tell you why I changed my mind, what MCT oil benefits I saw personally and the best ways for you to use it for yourself.

So, what are MCT Oils?
MCT’s are a flavorless oil commonly known as medium-chain triglycerides — which are a unique type of saturated fats often lacking in our normal diet.
I’m not going to delve into the breakdown of chemical compounds here as I am sure you are more interested in the benefits of MCT oil and how best to use them plus there’s a ton of information on compounds online.
In this article I am primarily going to talk about 100% pure MCT oil and the benefits from using. However, you may like to know MCT oils can be found in smaller quantities in coconut oil, grass-fed butter, yogurt, whole milk (which of course you can’t have on keto) and aged cheese.
What you may find interesting though is the fact that after consuming MCT oil your body breaks it down into various fatty acids which it then sends directly to your liver.
I can hear you saying why on earth would I find that interesting? Simply put it means that these fatty acids are getting used immediately as fuel rather than being stored as surplus fat on your body.
The end result of this process is a possible faster weight loss, increased metabolism, and improvement in energy for your brain and body. Personally, I need all the help I can get in all of those arenas.
Whilst I had actually known about MCT oil for some time I had just relegated it in my brain to being another version of coconut oil without fully realising the benefits MCT oil may have on its own.
No doubt you would be aware that coconut oil is also known to be good for you, but the big difference between the two is the difference in their medium-chain triglycerides. But again, without getting technical it comes down to the fact the coconut oil triglycerides stay in the liver longer and we don’t want that.
This is where MCT oils step up to the plate. Basically, MCT oil is coconut oil that has been refined and the extracted beneficial product is known as MCT oil.
My Initial MCT Oil Testing
You will read about a variety of ways to incorporate MCT oils into your Keto diet, but I like to try the easiest and least confrontational way first.
So that’s the method I’ll discuss first. I am a bit of a coffee addict and over the years have tried just about every variation you can think of so putting oil in my coffee, that was going to be a bit different.
There are many varieties and methods floating round the net, but I wanted to start with something simple to basically just find out if I liked it before getting too carried away with experiments.
At the end of the day the simple beginners butter coffee recipe that I got from Aaron Day at Fat for Weight Loss has been my all time favourite and I’ve stayed with it.
I am now a confirmed MCT oil, Butter coffee addict and have one nearly every morning to kick start my day.
But of course, usage of MCT oil isn’t restricted to coffee it can be used in a variety of ways, such being added to salad dressings, in your baking, cooking and sauces just to name a few.
How to Make Basic Butter Coffee
My method is fairly simple. I combine 2 tablespoons of unsalted grass-fed butter, with 1 tablespoon of MCT oil and blend it into my coffee. You can use your coffee of preference be it roasted, brewed or instant.
You can do this several ways depending on what kitchen gadgets you have access to. One method is to use a Nutri-bullet blender (just ensure your container is suitable for hot liquids) or you can do as I do – I like simple and I just use my coffee creamer.
The end result from both is still a nice frothy, creamy and absolutely delicious cup of coffee.
Other MCT Oil Benefits
Feel Full for Longer
As I experimented a bit more with the MCT oil one of the most noticeable effect was that I felt full for longer and consequently didn’t need to be constantly reaching for something to eat.
Apparently this is due to MCT oil increasing the release of two hormones in your body being peptide YY and leptin that promote the feeling of satiation in the body.
So, if you are thinking about trying intermittent fasting this is something you might definitely want to factor into your schedule.
There are a lot of dieters keto and others that will argue that butter/mct oil coffee doesn’t fit into the intermittent fasting regime. But we aren’t all die hard fasters.
At my age going for 16 or 20 hours without food is doable though not really sensible, but and this is a BIG, BUT I broke my fasting period up with at least one cup of bulletproof coffee and sometimes a bone broth and I still managed to keep consistently losing weight.
Promotes Weight Loss
On the topic of weigh loss that is another benefit I noticed that taking MCT oil helped to significantly reduce my body weight and waist circumference.
In 10 months, I have lost 16 kgs (35 pounds) which isn’t a huge loss compared to some however the inches lost have been well worth the effort, especially 12 inches from round my waist.
As to why it helps with weight loss, for starters MCT oils have 10% fewer calories than the long- chain triglycerides that are found in other healthy fats such as avocados, olive oils or nuts.
The fact that your body doesn’t process MCT oils the same as others also helps to burn calories and promote weight loss.
What this meant for me was that I had more energy. And if you suffer with thyroid disorders or Hashimoto’s you would know how important energy is.
With both of those disorders your body is compromised and keeps trying to compensate so you end up eating more, sleeping more, gaining weight and exercising less.
This is another benefit of MCT oil in that it has the opposite effect by helping with fat and stimulating more energy. Whilst it can’t cure Hashimoto’s by itself it can and does help with the metabolic function of your thyroid, by boosting energy.
MCT Oils May Help with Other Diseases
MCT oils are being recognised as good source of energy and may help with the fighting of bacterial growth, in addition to protecting your heart and possibly help in the management of diabetes, along with Alzheimer’s, epilepsy and possibly autism.
There have been studies that show another benefit of MCT oils is their ability to preserve the sensitivity of insulin in those suffering with type 2 diabetes. You can read the study from Healthline here.
A further benefit that has arisen from studies is an increase in immune function, and some mitigation of the severity of epileptic seizures. decreasing the risk of heart disease. You can read about this here.
It has also been established that MCT oil could help with reducing heart disease risk factors by lowering weight, cholesterol and inflammation. So it’s well worth adding it to your diet for those reasons if none other.
Assists with Ketosis
For anyone following a ketogenic diet and knowing the sometimes see saw effect of trying to stay in ketosis you might be pleased to know that using MCT oil could help you with managing this.
This is because MCT is readily converted into ketones, which are produced as an alternate energy source when carb intake is restricted.
So, if you are on a ketogenic diet taking MCT oil on a regular basis can assist you maintain your state of ketosis.
Which MCT Product is Best?
There are tons of different MCT oils on the market and knowing which one to choose can be difficult.
I tried a lot of different ones and at the end of the day it will come down to your own tastes.
